Have you used any job aggregator sites yet?

We know that the job search activity can be a tedious one. Going from one job site to another, creating accounts on each one of them, applying and tracking your application, all of this can be time consuming and difficult to manage.

In this post, I thought I could share with you one facility that has come up in recent years that can make your job hunting a little easier. This facility is called a job aggregator. There are several quite popular ones including SimplyHired.com, indeed.com, Bixee.com and of course, JobsByRef.com [look at the "The Web" tab on your search results], to name a few.

What job aggregators do is that they collect all the jobs from across all the job sites and even career pages of companies and present them to you in a single place. So that you dont have to go from job site to job site to see all the openings available to you.

For those of you who have not used job aggregators before, I hope this article helps make your job hunt a little less cumbersome.

All the best.

Career fairs… - Seth Godin

Marketing guru Seth Godin has written a gem on Career Fairs, something that job seekers and career fair organizers should think about. Complete text of the article is reproduced here:

Career fairs…

are neither.

Of course they don’t exist to help you plan or execute a career. Most of the organizations with booths are bottom fishing, looking for enough willing and able employees to fill established gaps in their companies. This is hiring on the hoof, wholesale filling of average jobs with people trying to be average. Planning a career at a career fair is a little like looking for a soul-mate at a singles’ bar.

And fair? Hardly. Because there are no average people, right? There are average jobs, certainly, average in that they require people to fit in, do what they’re told and follow the manual. I’ll grant you that those jobs need to get done, but I’m not sure they have to get done by you.

By the time a job opening hits the career fair, it’s a job you don’t want. And by the time a job seeker is walking down the aisles, standardized resume in hand, it might be too late for her to find a job that’s worthy of her.

Here’s to a new, better sort of career fair, one that’s selective, interactive, long-term and both career and fair.

Something for all of us to think about and possibly put into action the suggestions he has articulated so nicely.

Does your job happen to you? - Seth Godin

Well known marketing guru Seth Godin had written a very thoughtful piece on his blog asking us to think about our jobs, and not become a victim, which I think is relevant to most of us. I think one ought to ask this question to ourselves from time to time. The short article is reproduced here:

Does your job happen to you?

If you’re a willing cog in the vast machinery of work, it’s entirely possible that the things that occur all day feel like they’re being done to you.

The alternative is to create a job where you create forward motion, where you do things to the job, not the other way around.

Take a look at the language you use to describe what happened at work yesterday, that’s your first clue. If you’re not the one creating the change, perhaps it’s time to start.

Are you passionate about your job?

Accenture recruiting in India

Global technology and consulting major Accenture is to hire 8000 professionals by end of 2010 specifically in India.

“We are 42,000 right now in India and we imagine we will be about 50,000 by the end of 2010,” said Accenture Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, William D Green on the sidelines of the India Economic Summit. Green added, “We believe that analytics is going to be an important trend that our customers are going to demand from us. We think India is going to be a great place for us. We have some core centers of excellence in the analytics space in the country.”

It augurs well for job seekers in the IT services and consulting industry, as hiring is starting to increase post the downturn we saw in the last year or so. We are seeing some of the big companies starting to hire in large numbers. Hopefully, this is a start of things returning back to normal.

Forged certificates are a major problem - Kapil Sibal

In an effort to curb forgery of education certificates, HRD minister Kapil Sibal has said that they are setting up an online repository of certificates accessible for employers or anyone wanting to verify a persons educational qualifications.

Forged certificates are a major problem. There is no verification process with the employer and the credibility of our institutes comes under question. We are contemplating to establish a national database in an electronic format by an identified registered depository.

- Kapil Sibal, HRD minister.

The proposal aims to provide school boards, universities and certificate issuing institutions with direct linkages to the depository. The certificates will be uploaded by these institutions through a secure channel. According to the minister, this system is to go online and fully functional starting from the 2011 batch of students who pass out of the schools and colleges. Prof. Sanjay Dhande, Director, IIT Kanpur will head the task force entrusted with preparing the road map for implementation of this initiative.

We at JobsByRef.com welcome this initiative by the minister. This is something we feel strongly about as our philosophy is to help the genuine candidates stand out from the crowd using legitimate means and our Credix Score is an attempt to help this process of identifying genuine candidates.

Students who have already earned their degrees can register with the depository and have their degree certificates available online. It will benefit the students immensely, in the following ways:

1. Whenever they need a copy of their degree certificate they can download it from the online portal.

2. It allows jobseekers who are genuine to allow their potential employers to verify their degree certificates. It will make it easier for genuine candidates who do not believe in embellishing their resumes with fake degree information to stand out from the fakers out there.

3. Allows credential verification companies, generally engaged by companies who are hiring, recruitment firms, government agencies, banks and other agencies, to check out their educational credentials easily.

We wish and hope that this initiative gets implemented and is successful as there are clear benefits for all the stakeholders. We will closely monitor this positive development and bring the news to you here.
