The power of blogs and your online presence

In the new web 2.0 world, your resume is only one piece in your search for your dream career. More and more companies are ‘googling’ you and learning about you from all the social and professional networking sites you belong to, the formus and message boards you participate in, and, of course, your blog.

This can be great for you as long as you are careful. Here are some things you can do to help position yourself better.

  1. Don’t ever write anything on any site that you would not want potential employers to see. Once you write something, it is there on the net, practically for ever!
  2. If you don’t have a blog, create and maintain one. There are lots of free blog sites available for you including wordpress and blogger. Write interesting posts that showcase your areas of strength and capabilities.
  3. Participate in relevant forums and message boards and provide answers and support to your peers in your area of strength. This will not only showcase your strengths but build credibility and goodwill among your peers.
  4. Build a solid network of friends, colleagues and classmates.

All the best!
