You are the brand.

Welcome to brand You. That’s right, how you want to be perceived is up to you. You could be a “James - magic show - call 1-800-MAGIK” painted hastily on walls and pavements or worse you could be “Call Carla for a good time” scratched inside toilets.

Alternately, you could be the exclusive Rolex, that only the Messners and the Muhammad Alis of the world wear. Or a hand-crafted Rolls-Royce, or a factory built Mercedes S class, a Bugatti, a Ferrari or a Lamborghini custom-built for one person.

Or, you could be a friendly, ubiquitous, yet popular brand such as Ray-ban or Levis.

The choice is yours. And out there in the job market, the jobs that you want depend on brand You. If you apply to 100s of jobs indiscriminately or have your resume floating everywhere, you are nothing but a commodity - low value, easily available. If you are indistinguishable from a thousand others, you are like a mass produced product from China - cheap, won’t work or at best will last a few months, and easily replaceable.

Or you could be that special person who is just right for the job. Here are a few tips on building Brand You.

  1. Understand your strengths. Build on them.
  2. Do not get over-exposed. Do not apply to every job opening. Do not post your resume to every placement agency.
  3. Create and hold a profile that you can control.
  4. Highlight your strengths.
  5. Start a blog around your strong points, your areas of interest.
  6. Meet and connect to like-minded people.
  7. Use your strengths to help others.
  8. Let them see that you are special.

After all, you are one of a kind.
